Diverse World Cup team represents what America is all about

RECIFE, Brazil ― Jozy Altidore’s parents came from Haiti. Alejandro Bedoya’s parents were born in Colombia. And Kyle Beckerman’s family has roots in Germany and France.

So how do they identify themselves?

“American,” Beckerman said. “Everybody is American when they come over.”

The United States is a country built by immigrants, the quintessential melting pot. Whether your ancestors arrived last year or last century, EVERY American — with the exception of full-blooded Native Americans — has a family tree with roots somewhere else.
