During the spring of 1961, University of Iowa graduate assistant Lou Holtz's responsibilities included entertaining visiting football coaches.

One weekend, Bobby Bowden of Howard College in Alabama arrived on campus to learn Iowa's Wing-T offense. After Bowden and Holtz ate together at a restaurant owned by former major league pitcher Bill Zuber, they soon became friendly. They maintained a cordial relationship through the years, at least when they didn't face each other.

No game was bigger in their rivalry than on Nov. 13, 1993 when Bowden's top-ranked Florida State team visited Holtz's second-ranked Notre Dame squad. Heading into Saturday night's game in Tallahassee between the No. 2 Seminoles and the No. 5 Irish, Holtz, Bowden and several other coaches and players involved in that 1993 contest reminisced with USA TODAY Sports this week about a matchup billed as the "Game of the Century."

"I don't even care who was on the other sideline," Holtz said. "You love to visit with (Bowden) before the game, like with (former Michigan coach) Bo Schembechler, but once the game started, you don't worry about anything else except for the obligation you have to your team."
