BOSTON — David Ortiz had done everything else right in this World Series. He had hit just about every pitch. He had said the right things, at the right moments. Now, he could make one more memory. He held the World Series Most Valuable Player trophy high, in his right hand, looked out at his people, and shouted, “This is for you, Boston!”
Thus one of the greatest performances in baseball was complete: Ortiz had batted .688 in the Series, with a .760 on-base percentage, 2 home runs, 6 runs batted in and 7 runs scored. He improved his career World Series batting average to .455, best among players with at least 50 plate appearances.
And all that does not include the grand slam that St. Louis Cardinals right fielder Carlos Beltran took away from him in Game 1 of the Series.
