Broncos watch drug policy talks with Wes Welker in mind

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – Denver Broncos players said Wednesday they are closely monitoring the negotiations between the NFL and the NFL Players Association to try to reach agreement on a new drug policy, knowing that a new policy could mean a quick return for suspended wide receiver Wes Welker.

Two Broncos, outside linebacker Von Miller and tight end Jacob Tamme, represented the team on an NFLPA conference call Tuesday night. The union representatives did not take a vote yet, and negotiations continue today.

"I keep in touch with [the union]. I know they had the call last night and didn't get the news that we wanted. But hopefully I guess something is going on today," quarterback Peyton Manning said. "It would be great if they got it resolved it today. We'd love to get Wes back."

Welker was slapped with a four-game suspension eight days ago for violating the league's performance enhancing drug policy after a positive test for amphetamines. Under the proposed revised policy, amphetamines would be reclassified as a substance of abuse, and a first violation would not be punished with a suspension.

The Broncos adjusted their roster Tuesday as if they were preparing for Welker's return. The team waived wide receiver Nathan Palmer, who had been promoted off the practice squad last week. Denver currently has only 52 players on the active roster,
