Jets Sign Quarterback Quinn

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The Jets have four quarterbacks on their roster. Two have never attempted a regular-season pass in the N.F.L. Another, at this rate, will not throw again until Halloween. Or next week. Or the afternoon of the first snowfall. It is all a bit confusing.
And therein lies the appeal of that fourth quarterback, in designation only. When the Jets open their season Sunday against Tampa Bay, there is a chance that Brady Quinn, who signed on Monday after a morning workout, will not even suit up. He must learn the playbook, a different offense, a new set of teammates.
“I’ve been here for however many hours,” Quinn said.
This is no short-term arrangement, though. The longer Quinn is here, the more valuable he becomes.
For the immediate future, Quinn’s arrival sends the clearest signal yet that Mark Sanchez (shoulder) will be sidelined Sunday and beyond. That would thrust rookie Geno Smith into a starting role, though no official announcement has been made. Quinn, who turns 29 next month, is considered an improvement over Graham Harrell, who was released to make room on the roster, but does not have the potential of Matt Simms.
