Bullpen Collapse Costs Yankees a Sweep

Andy Pettitte left Sunday's game after he gave up two singles to start the seventh inning.
Andy Pettitte pitched well through six innings, but a seven-run seventh helped the Orioles salvage the finale of a three-game series.
Things were moving along just fine for the Yankees on Sunday. Andy Pettitte had not allowed a run and seemed to be in control through six innings, protecting a three-run lead against the Baltimore Orioles.
In the seventh, though, Pettitte surrendered a hit. Then he allowed another, with his 93rd pitch. So Manager Joe Girardi, who has frequently turned to his reliable bullpen in critical situations, did so again. This time, the result was disastrous.
The combined efforts of the relief pitchers resulted in a seven-run seventh inning for the Orioles, who went on to a 7-3 victory at Yankee Stadium.
With every game critical at this stage of the season, the Yankees were nine outs from completing a three-game sweep of Baltimore until the bullpen implosion.
First up was Shawn Kelley, who gave up a single and a J. J. Hardy three-run homer. Then Boone Logan allowed a bunt single and a walk, prompting Girardi to come out of the dugout once again, this time to call upon Joba Chamberlain.
