A Tense Moment in the 9th, but Nova Shuts Out Orioles

Ivan Nova pitched his first career shutout on Saturday.

Ivan Nova pitched his first career shutout on Saturday.
Behind Ivan Nova, the Yankees defeated Baltimore for the second game in a row and moved up in the wild-card race.

The ball hit by Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis in the ninth inning on Saturday against Ivan Nova went deep toward right field and hung high in the air for what might have seemed like minutes for the Yankees’ dugout. One swing with a man on base in a two-run game could quickly ruin what had been a standout performance by the Yankees’ ace of the moment.
Yankees Manager Joe Girardi grew worried because, after all, Davis leads the majors with 47 home runs. Catcher Chris Stewart thought the ball would stay in the park, but at Yankee Stadium, with a short right field area, seemingly every ball lofted high in the air has a chance to be a home run. Even Nova, who did not think Davis had struck the ball well enough, grew concerned because the ball simply would not land.
