Patriots benefit from controversial call in last-minute victory over Browns

The end zone flag New England Patriots fans wanted on a Monday night in November was finally thrown on Sunday, giving the Pats an unexpected and controversial victory over the Cleveland Browns.

After New England recovered a sneaky, up-the-middle onside kick with 1:01 remaining in the game, Tom Brady threw a deep pass to Josh Boyce in the end zone. New England was down five points and needed a touchdown. Leon McFadden had blanket coverage on the play, but Brady’s pass harmlessly sailed over Boyce’s head, setting up a 2nd and 10 with 35 seconds remaining and New England needing to go 30 yards to the end zone to scratch out a victory.

At least, that’s the scenario that should have developed. Instead, an official in the end zone threw a flag on McFadden for pass interference in the end zone.
