In Bulk Purchase of Free Agents, the Red Sox Go 7 for 7

Mike Napoli, left, and Stephen Drew, like five other Boston free agents, were veterans with playoff experience.

ST. LOUIS — The Boston Red Sox had been together just a few days in mid-February, and everyone seemed happy with the newcomers floating around the home clubhouse in Fort Myers, Fla. Seven free agents had joined a last-place roster, all with playoff experience and a sunny outlook.
Dustin Pedroia, the star second baseman, made no promises of a turnaround. He has played long enough to understand the futility of predictions. But he liked the feeling.

“We went out and got guys that we’re confident in and we know they’re going to care about winning,” Pedroia said. “That’s a positive sign. After the year we had last year, we want to make sure we come out and play every game like it’s a playoff game and see where we are at the end.”
