The Green Bay Packers are keeping tight end Jermichael Finley, and didn't require him to take a pay cut to play out the final year of his contract.
Finley will now earn the $3 million roster bonus that was due at 4 p.m. ET on Monday.
Along with his unchanged base salary of $4.45 million plus another $800,000 in other bonuses, the Packers are in line to pay him a total of $8.25 million for 2013. It's part of the two-year, $14 million deal he signed in February of 2012. Finley still would be an unrestricted free agent in March 2014.
Finley took to Twitter (@JermichaelF88) to announce his good fortunes and thank his representation for making things work out with Packers officials:
Green Bay took Finley in the third round of the 2008 draft, and he had a career-high 61 receptions last season. The Packers will hope he can combine that with the personal bests he set two seasons ago with 767 yards and eight touchdowns.
With the team not bringing back wide receiver Greg Jennings, who left for the Vikings, the Packers have bigger plans for Finley in their passing offense. Expect that to result in the tight end getting more red zone looks from quarterback Aaron Rodgers this season.
