The Green Bay Packers are committed to giving quarterback Aaron Rodgers a lucrative contract extension this offseason, and ESPN reports the team is close to signing him to a deal that would make him the highest-paid player in NFL history.
It's no surprise the Packers want to be quick in their response to lock up arguably the league's best active player. The Baltimore Ravens just rewarded their Super Bowl MVP quarterback, Joe Flacco, to a six-year deal averaging $20.1 million per season.
Rodgers has two years left (through 2014) on the six-year, $65 million deal he signed with the Packers in 2008. Expect his annual salary to be more than doubled, to around $24 million per season. Considering Flacco got $52 million of his deal guaranteed, expect Rodgers to approach $60 million guaranteed.
The Packers are smart to take care of Rodgers now. The three-time Pro Bowler and 2011 league MVP has the highest career passer rating (104.9) in league history. Soon, his contract will be No. 1, too.
