Tim Duncan passes Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become all-time playoff minutes leader
Tim Duncan passed Hall of Fame center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the all-time leader in postseason minutes during the Spurs’ 107-86 victory over the Heat in Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Thursday.
Abdul Jabbar logged 8,851 minutes in 237 playoff games. Duncan broke the record in four fewer games and has now played 8,870 minutes.
San Antonio has made the playoffs in every one of Duncan’s 17 seasons and he was sidelined by injury only once (2000; meniscus tear). As a result, one of the greatest in basketball history has an appropriately prestigious playoff résumé.
Duncan, 38, has won four titles and three Finals MVPs. Within those championship runs and others Duncan has also posted some amazing postseason marks:
• 4th in career playoff games, with a chance to leapfrog Derek Fisher, Robert Horry and Abdul-Jabbar next season.
• 5th in career playoff points and within range of claiming the No. 4 spot from Shaquille O’Neal next year.
• 3rd in career playoff rebounds, albeit with little chance of catching Bill Russell or Wilt Chamberlain.
• 1st in career playoff blocks, with Serge Ibaka (18th) the nearest active player.
• 7th in career playoff PER, ranked among the likes of O’Neal and Hakeem Olajuwon.
