The icon sat at the end of the bench and watched the final 20 minutes of this historic event from underneath a winter hat, a pom-pom on top of his head and bitter scowl across his face.
Martin Brodeur, arguably the best goalie in NHL history, was pulled from Sunday afternoon’s Stadium Series game at Yankee Stadium after just two periods of work, watching his understudy, Cory Schneider, get the cleanup work in the Devils’ 7-3 loss to the Rangers.
Brodeur gave up six goals on 21 shots, and left his team pretty well buried by the time coach Pete DeBoer mercifully put him on the bench. Although it seemed the majority of the 50,105 in attendance were in Devils red — technically the home team — the resounding sound as the game ended was of Brodeur’s first name, sung in the familiar two syllables of “Mar-ty, Mar-ty.”
By the third period, the Rangers were up 6-3, and the final nail in the coffin came on a Derek Stepan penalty shot as he fired a wrist shot past Schneider’s blocker to make it 7-3 with 9:54 remaining. It was the Rangers’ sixth unanswered goal, their total of seven the most scored since the NHL started playing outside with the Winter Classic in 2008.
