CONCORD, N.C. – Jeff Gordon is struggling with back spasms that caused him to miss most of Saturday's practice sessions at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Gordon said after running just 11 laps of Coca-Cola 600 practice that he was done for the day in order to rest for NASCAR's longest race of the year Sunday night.
JR Motorsports Nationwide Series driver Regan Smith will be on standby for the Coke 600, Gordon said.
"It's unfortunate," Gordon said. "I've had some spasms in the past, but this one is a little bit different. I just want to be cautious and take care of it. It doesn't do me any good to be out there in the car right now, especially as good as it is."
