As far back as the Olympics in August, 34-year-old Lakers star Kobe Bryant was saying that he likely would play through this year and next, then hang up his high tops and retire.
A rough and tumble season in which he has had some of his strongest production of the last five years (27.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 5.9 assists)—even as the Lakers have struggled and could miss the playoffs—hasn’t changed Bryant’s thinking.
Bryant, who is suffering from a bone spur in his left foot, managed to play against Sacramento on Saturday, scoring 19 points with 14 assists and nine rebounds in a win the Lakers badly needed to keep their playoff hopes alive. But no matter how this year pans out, Bryant is leaning toward retirement and will make a decision this summer.
